The project aims to produce 1000 tons of farmed fish in the first year, then scale up production to 4,000 tons within 3 years for the domestic, regional and international markets. The project will also produce fingerlings for its own use and selling to other fish farmers.
The species to be cultured are Oreochromis karongae (Chambo) and some Bagrus meridionalis (Kampango catfish). Fingerlings will be produced in hatcheries using selective breeding techniques while outgrowing will take place in cages in the lake. The project location is at Kambiri Point, South Senga Bay in Salima and it is expected to commence in the 4th quarter of 2019 once all regulatory and financing processes have been completed.
